The story of the poor widow is a testimony that should encourage us to pursue every endeavour that we long for. Psalms 37:4 tells us to ‘take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart’. But sometimes, even in this delight, we fear pursuing these desires. Often, we can convince ourselves out of trying to achieve our goals, hopes, and vocations simply because of the fear of failure. What if we are not enough? What if we don’t have enough to build on? What if our small beginnings are too small?
When the widow pleaded to Elisha for help, she told him that she owned nothing except for a small jar of oil. Now, the widow had just experienced the loss of her husband and her creditor was coming to take her sons as slaves. The widow is at her lowest; she has no husband, no belongings, and soon, no sons. Do you ever feel as if you have nothing to offer up to God? However, Elisha doesn’t dwell on her story; her sadness, her pain, her shame, her lack. Instead, he asks her…
